El Norte de Argentina

I spent a week driving through the North of Argentina. 4,400 km from Mendoza up through Cafayate, Colome, Cachi, Salta & Tilcara. We found wonderful and intense wines in Cafayate, great music in Salta, amazing tamales and humita, wonderful people, sandboarding and the only bullfight in Argentina. I can’t wait to go back.

Ko Samet

After running through Northern Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia (taking several thousand photos), it was time for a few days at the beach…Ko Samet is a small island about 2 1/2 hours from Bangkok.

Muay Thai Boxing

I went to the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium (www.muaythailumpini.com) in Bangkok last night to see Thailand’s national sport of Muay Thai (it’s almost as big here as futbol is in Argentina). I wanted to see the spectacle, but didn’t expect to stay long…next thing I knew it was 3 1/2 hours (and many Singha beers) later. It was a blast.

Cambodia and Angkor Wat

After an hour flight from Laung Prabang we arrived in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I was blown away by Angkor Wat and the other temples. Most of the temples were built in the 12th century and several are well preserved (a few others have been taken over by the jungle). I could spend weeks taking photos here — but I only had 3 days. I woke up every day at 4:30 to go see sunrise from a different location. While the temples and scenery is beautiful, Siem Reap is build for tourism and in high season, I think I would hate it. Between rainy season and the global economic slowdown, for most of the trip we have evaded crowds and enjoyed mostly empty hotels.

Next stop Bangkok…

Riding elephants in Laos

They are big…huge actually. I guess that should not be surprising. They were also super gentle and very slow. There are only about 2,000 elephants left in Laos — as economic development continues in the country, they are losing their habitat and their jobs. It’s expensive to feed an elephant — they eat 200 kilos of food every single day. So they need to work for their food. For years they were used for logging. Now that logging has decreased there are a few projects that are rescuing them, taking care of the elephants and providing a pretty cool tourist attraction…especially crossing the river. The folks at http://www.elephant-park-project.org/ are reallu great and doing super work.
